DR KAMARUL HASHIMY BIN HUSSEIN
Consultant Sports Medicine
Dr Kamarul has been with the National Sports Institute since January 2008. He acquired his medical degree (MBBCh BAO) from the Queen’s University of Belfast, United Kingdom in 2004. He then furthered his studies in Masters of Sports Medicine at University Malaya from 2009 until 2013. In 2014, he received his gazettement as a Sports Medicine Specialist and continues his medical service to the National athletes at the National Sports Institute.
During his services at the National Sports Institute, he has dealt with various kinds of sports injuries cases that sustained among the National athletes. Musculoskeletal injuries including of muscle, tendon, ligament, cartilage and bone injuries are the common injuries suffered by the National athletes and the most challenging part in treating them is to help them recover and become fit to compete again at the International level. Some of the treatment given to the athletes requires the usage of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) under the ultrasound guided injection for faster healing. At the same time he involves in a research regarding PRP treatment for hamstring injury among the elite athletes to prove the effectiveness usage of PRP. This is to correlate with his evidence based practice in treating his athletes.
Dr Kamarul has been part of the National Contingent for major sports events since 2007. He was the medical officer for SEA Games Korat Thailand 2007, SEA Games Palembang Indonesia 2011, SEA Games Yangoon Myanmar 2013, SEA Games Singapore 2015 and SEA Games Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 2017. He was also involved in the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014 and Asian Games Incheon 2014. He was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) during the Paralympic Games Rio Brazil 2016 in which at that major event our National para-athletes had won 3 Gold Medals. He was again given the trust and responsible to lead the Malaysian Medical Team as the Chief Medical Officer for the recent Asian Games Indonesia 2018. Besides that, he is the Team Doctor for the Men’s National Hockey Team during the recent Asian Games Jakarta Indonesia and FIH Men’s Series Finals Kuala Lumpur 2019 in which the National team emerged as runners up for both competitions.
Currently Dr Kamarul is the Director of the Sports Medicine Division in National Sports Institute in which he oversees Sports Medicine Branch, Sports Care Branch and Sports Rehabilitation Branch. He is affiliated with the Malaysian Football Association (FAM) as a medical committee member and also with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) as a medical officer. Apart from that, his interest in teaching led him as a supervisor for every Sports Medicine Masters student of University Malaya who are require to do 3 months of attachment at the Sports Medicine Department, National Sports Institute. He is also a committee member for National Postgraduate Medical Curriculum (Sports Medicine) as well as one of the External Examiners for the Sports Medicine Masters Programme in University Malaya. During his free time, he likes to keep fit and burn calories by jogging and plays futsal.
